producing = herding cats

Posted in Uncategorized on January 28, 2009 by runningfornow

Let it be known, sing it from rafters high… I hate producing.

That said, let this be known: I love making movies!

It’s bitter. It’s sweet. It’s filmmaking. No matter how many flaming hoops need jumping through to grab that prize on the other side, it’s worth all the trouble. Bear with me while I iron out the meet-up and rehearsal schedule.

Finalist — thus begins the final countdown

The Sleeping Deep is a finalist in this year’s StoryPros International Screenwriting Contest. Check out the list here:

Winners will be announced Sat. the 31st. Boy oh boy, it’s gonna be a looooong week.

In other news, things are coming together for the week of Feb. 2-6. I’m a firm believer in the adage, “Things don’t just happen, you make them happen.” Balls are rolling, plans coalescing… there’s quite a bit going on!

Stay tuned, folks. ;)

Locations for auditions, readings…

Posted in Uncategorized on January 21, 2009 by runningfornow

Since most of the cast members are located in S.F., John and I are going to make arrangements to meet with folks in the city. Sorry, we don’t have a date yet. In time…

The goal is to stagger the day with the handful of scenes we’re planning on shooting so people aren’t hurrying up to wait around.

I’d like to have actors read through the scenes, then play around with some blocking, then we’ll act it out in broad strokes a few times. This process will give John some ideas for camera placement as well as give me the chance to see what works, what doesn’t and to answer any questions you may have along the way. It also helps puts us all in the mindset of shooting these scenes for real. Yeah!

I also want to be clear that every actor will have access to and/or get a copy of the scene in which they are in. We will most likely create Quicktime files or upload to YouTube or Vimeo, so you will be able to link to it if that’s something you wanted to do. I know getting scenes from directors and producers can sometimes be a lot of red tape. This is not the case with Red Brick Films ;) We’re here for the actors because without them we’d be shooting blanks.

And our U.K. based concept artist Mike Nash has started work on Kevin’s journal. If you haven’t had the chance to see some of his illustrations, click over to his website and take a look. His portfolio is quite impressive.

I’ll be in touch with everyone separately to discuss the best days for meeting up. Until then, I’ll leave you with this quote from someone whose work I read quite a bit when doing research for The Sleeping Deep, famed author and mythologist Joseph Campbell:

If you follow your bliss, doors will open where you would have not thought there would be doors; and where there wouldn’t be a door for anyone else.
